August 8, 2012 a round table "Iron Nykhas" with the participation of the representatives of the Ossetian diaspora and foreign countries took place in Tskhinval. It was organized on the initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia in the frames of the commemorative events devoted to the fourth anniversary of the August 2008 armed aggression of Georgia against South Ossetia, in which hundreds of people, including Russian peacekeepers stationed in South Ossetia under an international mandate were killed.
The roundtable participants condemned the actions of the Georgian leadership which led to numerous casualties, destruction and dire humanitarian situation in the region. On the day of the fourth anniversary of the tragic events of August 2008, they called on all states of the world and international organizations to condemn the armed aggression of Georgia against the people of South Ossetia and help bring the perpetrators to justice. The fight against any kind of violence should be global, comprehensive and sustained, but not selective and discriminatory. And it should avoid double standards.
Recent developments in international relations show that the multilateral approach widely supported by international community is the most effective way of meeting the challenges of the modern world.
The roundtable participants expressed grave concern over the events in Syria, and above all, the plight of the Ossetians living in Syria who had been held hostage to events, and called for a politically bloodless solution to the conflict.
The participants expressed their profound gratitude to the Russian Federation and other countries which had recognized the independence of the Republic South Ossetia. Russia, carrying out an operation of forcing Georgia to peace, saved the people of South Ossetia was from total destruction, and on August 26, 2008 it recognized the independence of South Ossetia.
The participants recognized that the people of South Ossetia achieved its age-old dream - the recognition of the independence of the state - at the cost of two decades of intense struggle, at the cost of huge losses and incredible tests. And now it has a chance to build a full-blooded independent state, it has the trust of the Russian Federation and the countries which have recognized the independence of the country. Republic of South Ossetia is determined to follow the path of building a peaceful, democratic and prosperous nation.
The meeting confirmed that the policy of the state should be based on respect for the independence and sovereignty and the principles of non-interference in the internal affairs of another state, the promotion and protection of human rights as a prerequisite for socio - economic development of nations.
