On January 19, 2012 is celebrated a twentieth anniversary since holding of referendum of independence of the Republic of South Ossetia and its reunification with Russia. Twenty years ago southossetian people fulfilled a significant political step in formation of its statehood. At the nation-wide voting conducted in full accordance with international norms and in presence of international observers from former USSR it uphold its right for creation of the independent state and a choice of strategic course and partners. The referendum was preceded by adoption of the Declaration of Independence of South Ossetia on December 21, 1991, the next day after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
The Referendum of January 19, 1992 was conducted in terms of severe blockade and an armed aggression of Georgia. 99% of Referendum participants supported the independence of South Ossetia. Results of the Referendum clearly showed legitimacy of political goals realized by the Government of the Republic of South Ossetia and a high level of people’s consolidation. Following the Referendum the Supreme Council of the Republic of South Ossetia on May 29, 1992 adopted an Act of Declaration of independence of the Republic of South Ossetia.
People’s unanimity, expressed at the referendum of January 19, 1992 was confirmed almost in 15 years at the Referendum of Independence of the Republic of South Ossetia on November 12, 2006 that clearly showed that the course of independence and unification with Russia is a deliberate, achieved through the hard conditions of permanent war with Georgia course of development of our state.
On August 26, 2008 Russian Federation after forcing of Georgian aggressor to peace that once again started a war with South Ossetia, recognized an independence of the Republic of South Ossetia. After that, a number of states recognized the independence of South Ossetia and their number is increasing.
Recognition of independence gave new possibilities for the development of South Ossetia. Now its safety is guaranteed by Russian Federation on the bases of bilateral agreements. The state is confidently moving forward on the way of socio-economic development of modern democratic state governed by the rule of law. Foreign-policy course of South Ossetia is directed on development of partner relations with all states.
