34-я годовщина Ередской трагедии

Today in South Ossetia the victims of the Yered tragedy - one of the most inhuman crimes in the modern history of the Ossetian people - are being remembered.

34 years ago, on 18 March 1991, near the village of Yered, Georgian armed formations dropped 25 Ossetians from the military vehicle ‘Ural’, which belonged to the Internal Troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the USSR. Women and children miraculously managed to escape, while 12 men were buried alive after brutal torture and the burial site was levelled with a bulldozer.

The ferocity of the Yered barbaric act still shocks with its particular cruelty and cynicism and remains an open wound in the historical memory of every Ossetian. Despite the years, the grief for the victims has not subsided.

Paying tribute to the memory of the victims of the massacre, we are convinced that fair retribution will sooner or later catch up with the perpetrators and masterminds of this heinous crime, which has no statute of limitations.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia A. M. Dzhioev and members of the Ministry's staff took part in the mourning event and laid flowers at the mass grave at the city cemetery in South Ossetia.
