Commentary of the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia in connection with the statements of Georgian Foreign Minister M. Bochorishvili in an interview with the Spanish agency EFE

Attention was drawn to the statements of the Georgian Foreign Minister Maki Bochorishvili in an interview with the Spanish agency EFE, in which she voiced a kind of ‘reference points’ of the old-new Georgian foreign policy, in particular, stating that “her country does not want a new war with Russia, but does not refuse membership in NATO and the European Union (EU)”. At the same time, the head of Georgian diplomacy did not miss the opportunity to use the well-worn term “separatist region” in relation to South Ossetia, as well as the thesis of so-called occupation of Georgian regions - South Ossetia and Abkhazia – “20% of the national territory” by Russia.

Leaving aside free interpretation of reality, we have to draw attention of M. Bochorishvili to dissonance of her statements with conciliatory tone of speeches that sounded earlier from a number of Georgian politicians. It is obvious that they remained pre-election rhetoric.

In her interview about the advent of the era of realism, the Georgian Foreign Minister forgets the true reality that has emerged in the region since August 2008, the recognition of the independence of the Republic of South Ossetia and the Republic of Abkhazia, the results of the work of the international commission of H. Tagliavini, which recognised Georgia as an aggressor, the importance of the International Security Discussions in the Transcaucasia, the key goal of which is to ensure lasting security in the region and exclude the possibility of a resumption of hostilities, etc.

In fact, we see a different emphasis being placed on NATO membership as Georgia's strategic goal, a desire to build ties with the EU and an assessment of Russia as ‘challenge number one for Georgia’

South Ossetia has chosen a different path in its historical development and reaffirms once again the unchanged course of strengthening relations with the Russian Federation, which is the only guarantor of peace and security, and also the development of mutually beneficial cooperation with friendly countries.
