Today, on September 17, South Ossetia celebrates the 16th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance between the Republic of South Ossetia and the Russian Federation. The framework agreement became the first comprehensive basic document between the two countries. The agreement laid foundation for the long-term strategic partnership between our states in the fields of politics, economy, energy, military-technical cooperation, science, culture, education, information, health etc.
Over the past period, a solid legal foundation for the bilateral cooperation has been created, including the Treaty of Alliance and Integration between the Republic of South Ossetia and the Russian Federation, dated March 18, 2015. The mechanism of interaction between Russian federal agencies and the South Ossetian partners in various formats has been fine-tuned. Intensive work is being conducted to improve and unify the legislation of the Republic with the Russian one. For the time being there are more than 130 documents in force covering almost all areas of the bilateral relations, which allow conducting a permanent close dialogue on key areas of the bilateral cooperation.
Definitely, the document is historic. Thanks to the Treaty Russia has become a guarantor of peace and security in South Ossetia and prevents escalation of tensions in the whole region. People in South Ossetia remember very well and highly appreciate Russia’s contribution to establishing peace and stability in Transcaucasia.
