On August 8, commemorative events, dedicated to the 16th anniversary of the beginning of the military aggression of Georgia against South Ossetia were held in foreign agencies of the South Ossetian Foreign Ministry.
In Moscow, a prayer was served in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior for the victims of the Georgian aggression - the South Ossetian civilians, defenders of Tskhinval, the Ossetian and Russian peacekeepers, soldiers and officers of the Russian army who saved South Ossetia from extermination at the cost of their lives.
The commemorative event was attended by a delegation of the Embassy of the Republic of South Ossetia, headed by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of South Ossetia Znaur Gassiev, a delegation of the Embassy of the Republic of Abkhazia, headed by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Alkhas Kvitsinia, a delegation of the Embassy of the Republic of Nicaragua, headed by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Alba Torres, a delegation of the Embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, headed by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Jesús Velásquez, a delegation of the Syrian Arab Republic, Konstantin Zatulin, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on CIS Affairs and Relations with Compatriots, Georgy Muradov, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Crimea to the President of the Russian Federation, Ruslan Gagkuev, Chairman of the Board of the Russian Historical Society, Acting Official Representative of the Republic of Adygea to the President of the Russian Federation Fatima Romanova, a delegation of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania to the President of the Russian Federation, Head of the Representative Office of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic Leonid Manakov, a delegation of the Representative Office of the Government of the Samara Region to the Government of the Russian Federation, delegation of the All-Russian public organization “Young Guard of United Russia”, a delegation of the Ossetian community of Moscow.
In the night from the seventh to the eighth of August, at the Memorial complex for Military Glory at the Eternal Flame in the village of Parkany of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic, the Official Representative Office of South Ossetia in Pridnestrovie held a commemorative action and served a prayer in memory of the victims of the Georgian aggression in South Ossetia.
Representatives of the executive and legislative authorities of Pridnestrovie, the leadership and residents of the village of Parkany as well as employees of the Representative Office of Abkhazia in Pridnestrovie took part in the prayer service and in the ceremony of laying flowers in memory of the civilians, the militia, the soldiers and the peacekeepers, killed in August 2008.
While addressing the audience, the Official Representative of South Ossetia in Pridnestrovie Vitaliy Yankovskiy recalled those terrible days and the importance of holding similar events, aimed at preserving the memory of heroically brave people and promoting the historical truth and justice.
Commemorative event “the Candle of Memory”, dedicated to the 16th anniversary of the beginning of Georgia’s military aggression against South Ossetia, will be held in the evening on August 8, in Sukhum.
Candles will be lit in memory of the victims at the square in front of the Abkhazian State Drama Theater.
