On 7-8 August, commemorative events, dedicated to the 16th anniversary of the beginning of the Georgian military aggression against South Ossetia, are being held in the Republic of South Ossetia.

On 7 August, the opening of the photo exhibition “08.08.08 - 08.08.24” took place and the play “The Last Witness” about the genocide of the Ossetians in 1920 was performed in the State Drama Theatre named after K.L. Khetagurov. Later, a mourning ceremony was held at the memorial complex “Defenders of South Ossetia”, during which the participants laid flowers at the memorial and lit candles in memory of the victims.

On 8 August, flowers were laid at the places where South Ossetian defenders have fallen, including the Tree of Sorrow, the central monument of the Museum of Burnt Souls in the village of Tbet. In the village of Itrapis of the Dzau region, an official ceremony was held to unveil a monument to Russian military pilot, Hero of Russia Vladimir Yedamenko, who died in August 2008. Memorial services for the victims of the August war were held in the churches of the Republic.

Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia A. M. Dzhioev and staff of the Ministry participate in the commemorative events.
