The formation of the Republic of South Ossetia is inextricably linked with the establishment of the Ossetian tricolor. The desire to have national symbols was a form of self-identification of the South Ossetian people. Recreated by the participants in the national liberation movement in 1989, the Ossetian tricolor has been inspiring the defenders of the Motherland to victory all these years, has been uniting the Ossetian people in the fight for their rights, and encouraging workers, intellectuals and athletes to new achievements.

The national flag of South Ossetia is a rectangular panel consisting of three equal stripes - white, red and yellow (gold). The colors of this flag have been well known since the Alan antiquity. White color symbolizes spirituality, purity, wisdom; red – right, strength, courage; yellow – prosperity, abundance, wealth. This is a traditional color scheme for the Ossetian culture, which generally embodies the idea of world and social harmony.
