Comment by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia

Pertaining to Georgian leader G. Margvelashvili's speech on the World Economic Forum

The World Economic Forum which took place in Istanbul in September, 2014 was marked by a statement made by Georgian leader G. Margvelashvili who declared that "Georgia paid for European integration" in 2008, when Russia recognized the independence of the Republic of South Ossetia. He stated it was "a punishment for the free choice made by Georgia”. Actually this is the new form of an old lie fabricated by M. Saakashvili, the predecessor of the new head of Georgia.

It is well-known how implementing a barbarous plan "Chistoe pole"(“clear field”), which was aimed to mop up the Ossetians from the territory, Georgian army attacked perfidiously South Ossetia in August, 2008. The fact that it had been Georgia who unleashed the war against South Ossetia was confirmed by a special commission of the EU which made a report upon investigation of the reasons of armed conflict in South Ossetia.

Being the third war in South Ossetia since 1990, the August war of 2008, resulted once again in a great number of victims, caused heavy damage to infrastructure of the country and left thousands of people homeless. The attack of Georgian army, the shooting of Russian peacemakers organized by Georgian soldiers and the death of hundreds of Russian citizens compelled Russia to the aggressor pacification and became the reason for making decision on recognition of South Ossetia and Abkhazia as the only opportunity to remove the danger of war coming from Tbilisi.

The truth about the beginning of August, 2008 in South Ossetia is already world-known and is deteriorating relations of Georgia with the world community that stopped considering Georgia «a stronghold of western democracy» long ago. However the propagandistic fabrications on calling the aggression of August, 2008 the Russian-Georgian war that were invented during Saakashvili's regime are still repeated in Tbilisi. Such brainwashing managed by Georgian propagandists gives output only among their own population. However lie in no way can turn into truth even if it is repeated constantly, but the one repeating this lie faces a risk that his other words won't be taken in all good faith.
