On refugee draft resolution submitted by the Georgian delegation at the UN General Assembly
On 19 May 2014 the Georgian delegation submitted to UN General Assembly draft resolution on refuges and IDPs from South Ossetia and Abkhazia for the sixth time. Voting on this resolution is planned in the first decade of June.
Every year, starting from 2009, this one sided Georgian initiative has nothing to do with the existing realty and concerns about refugees and IDPs of different ethnicities but is only aimed at politicization of the humanitarian issues. Georgia is again trying to return positions that were lost and make sure the GA member-states believe that South Ossetia and Abkhazia are still parts of Georgia.
Above that Georgian side refuses to realize that only in the result of repeated attacks of Georgia on South Ossetia, bloodshed and ethnic cleansing more that hundred thousand Ossetians became refugees.
It is surprising that discussions of those resolutions for so many years were done in the absence of representatives of South Ossetia and Abkhazia and none of the voting countries ever raised interest in opinion of the other side. Due to lack of possibilities for South Ossetia and Abkhazia to present their position to the GA the document looses its objectivity and blocks perspectives for discussions of these issues at Geneva Discussions on Security in Transcaucasia that take place from October 2008 with participation of representatives of UN, EU, OSCE, Russia, US, South Ossetia, Abkhazia and Georgia.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Republic of South Ossetia appeals to the International Community to refrain from supporting the Georgian draft of the document as the document mispresents political and humanitarian reality in the region and does not contribute to Geneva Discussions process.
