Comment of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia

Pertaining to the statement of Georgian Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze at the 73ed session of the UN General Assembly

Sick imagination of Georgian Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze again has led to innuendos. These insinuations, outlined by the Prime Minister at the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly, have nothing to do with the reality and are aimed to convince the international community in improving relations with the Ossetians. Concern about reduce of the South Ossetian population which allegedly happened because of “the grave humanitarian, socioeconomic, and human rights situation” was equally cynical.

Indeed, the population of South Ossetia has dropped, but certainly not because of the grave humanitarian situation, as the Prime Minister of Georgia is saying. Obviously, he is lacking the courage to state the real reasons for the decline in the number of the South Ossetian population.

Annexation plans of the Georgian authorities, who live under the delusion of seizing foreign territories, the policy of genocide pursued against the Ossetians, have been lasting for centuries. Only throughout one century South Ossetia fell under several ethnic cleanings and genocide. As a result of genocides of the Ossetian people in 1920, 1989-1992, the military invasion in 2004 and, finally, the Georgian-Ossetian war in August 2008, the people of South Ossetia went through all circles of hell. Significant decrease of the Ossetian population was a logical result of that physical extermination. This is the true face of the Georgian policy to “brothers”, heavily made-up, but with the same essence.

The problem of Georgia is that it is exaggerating greatly its economic opportunities and, which is even more misleading, its geopolitical significance. Georgia is one of the poorest countries in the post-Soviet space. It faces critical problems with living standards and human rights, which are being extensively violated. That is what Georgian politicians should direct their efforts at.

The twenty-eight year period of independent existence of the Republic of South Ossetia fully confirms its viability. South Ossetia is an independent, internationally recognized state and there should be no illusions about “our common future” with Georgia.

Much of the blame for the inadequacy of Georgian leaders, who from the highest international tribune have been broadcasting their phobias and manias to the international community, lies on the politicians of the Western countries and the United States – those who persistently encourage the biased unilateral Georgian position, which, undoubtedly, is far from the true state of affairs.

Ten years have passed since August 2008, the time of the bloody aggression of Georgia against the people of South Ossetia. There was enough time to indicate firmly and clearly the aggressor. However, for the time being, neither the international community has succeeded in giving a proper assessment to the August War, which aimed at extermination of the South Ossetian people, who prefer walking the path of independence, nor the aggressor has been convicted, nor the forces that were conducive to the August events have been pointed out.

This signifies the reluctance of the Western countries and the United States to see the realities in Transcaucasia, which gives Georgia carte blanche for further military actions.
