Press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia

In anticipation of the official visit of Raul Khadzhimba, the President of the Republic of Abkhazia, to the Republic of South Ossetia, Anatolii Bibilov, the President of the Republic of South Ossetia, signed a Decree, dated November 26, 2017, on pardoning Georgian citizen Giorgi Giunashvili, sentenced by the Supreme Court of the Republic of South Ossetia on February 3, 2017.

The release of the citizen of Georgia was rendered at the request of the Abkhazian President Raul Khadzhimb, who earlier had addressed a corresponding letter to the South Ossetian President Anatolii Bibilov.

With an active involvement of Raul Khadzhimba, the President of the Republic of Abkhazia, four citizens of the Republic of South Ossetia, who had been sentenced in Georgia for life imprisonment in 2005, were released in 2016.

Relevant authorities of the Republic of South Ossetia handed the pardoned Georgian citizen to Zurab Lakerbaya, the Plenipotentiary Representative of the President of the Republic of Abkhazia for Relations with International Organizations on Humanitarian Issues, for transmission to the Georgian side.
