Comment of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia

We’ve paid attention to statements made by the US State Department’s Spokesperson about the referendum on joining the Russian Federation that is going to be held in the Republic of South Ossetia.

Not only words about support of Georgian territorial integrity that lost their relevance 24 years ago, but also absolutely inconsistent objections against such referendum being hold in South Ossetia were heard once again.
Attempt of heavy-handed interference into sovereign affairs of other state, characteristic for the USA, surprises in this case not as much as the fact of negative attitude to the highest form of direct democratic expression of will by the people who determine their destiny by means of a referendum. And this attitude is voiced not somewhere, but exactly in the United States, who consider themselves the main bulwark of democracy.

The right of citizens of the Republic of South Ossetia to determine the destiny of their country independently does not need the US State Department’s approval, and with this background we believe it is necessary to address the USA strong recommendations to get acquainted with modern history of South Ossetia, with basic principles of international law and with the existing realities in the South Caucasus region.

They have to realize in the USA that aspiration of South Ossetia to become a part of the Russian Federation is based on long-term safety considerations and the desire to maintain stability in the region, especially in context of revanchist aspirations of Georgia, the state that is supported by the United States in political and military spheres.
