July, 17 saw a special statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia condemning military exercises, staged by the 58th Army of the Russian Federation in Southern Military District and South Ossetia, and naming them “acts of provocation”.
The concern expressed by Georgian authorities about the alleged danger coming from the staged military exercises obviously is of far-fetched nature. The Russian Federation as a peacekeeper during the August war of 2008 between Georgia and South Ossetia, having forced Georgia to peace and having played a crucial role in fixing the conflict up, is the only guarantor of stability in the region today. It only are Russian military forces dislocated in South Ossetia carrying out their mission regulated by the existing bilateral agreement, who maintain the long-expected peace on South Ossetia.
Trying to camouflage its unhealthy revanchist ambitions the Georgian party falls back on policy of inducing reaction against Russia. Numerous offers and appeals to international community made by South Ossetia and Russia regards demilitarization of Georgia were heard by nobody. Moreover, after the failure of “Chistoe pole” blitzkrieg the military potential of Georgia was significantly increased. All joint projects of Georgia, USA and NATO implemented on Georgian territory promote increasing tensions and inspire Georgian party to next provocative actions, similar to the recent incident that happened about the border.
Any foreign help to Georgia, especially military help, no matter how it is justified, complicates the process of building peace and stability in the region.
