Comments of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. David Sanakoev

In respect of the speech of M. Saakashvili at winter session of PACE

The speech of the President Saakashvili was at the session of Parliamentary Assembly was of course tendentious and biased to South Ossetia and Russian Federation. We have not heard anything new from the president of Georgia. He had the same rhetorics as before, which is also followed by the Government of Georgia for many years and the culmination of which was the military aggression in August 2008.

President of Georgia called again South Ossetia and Abkhazia occupied territories. Irrationality of terms ‘occupation’ and ‘occupied territories’ in respect of South Ossetia and Abkhazia was proved by international experts at the 20th round of International Geneva Discussions. As for the Russian Federation, it remains the only guarantor of peace, stability and security of Republic of South Ossetia and is not therefore considered to be an occupant, as said by Mr. Saakashvili. In his speech the President talked a lot about democracy in the country but did not said anything about the facts of human rights’ violation in Georgia. We are sorry to observe that new authorities of Georgia support the policy of Saakashvili as among the hundreds amnestied political detainees there are no citizens of the Republic of South Ossetia.

South Ossetia is bewildered with the fact despite numerous calls on international organizations, including PACE, to give an opportunity to residents of South Ossetia to speak on their own behalf , is not supported and authorities of Georgia state unilaterally only their own position.
