The commentary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia

Pertaining to the statement of I. Garibashvili at UN GA 69th session

On 26 of September Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili made a speech at the 69th session of UN General Assembly. During the speech Garibashvili declared that Georgia “still aims to settle peacefully August war 2008 and put an end to Russian occupation”, and “to become a supplier of security, not just its user”. Garibashvili also noted the annually enhancing support of UN member states on Georgia’s resolutions pertaining to refugees and IDPs and called all UN members to continue this practice in future.

It should be noted that there is nothing new in the words of Garibashvili. Such statements of Georgian politicians are traditionally designed for propaganda effect. The war of August 2008 started with the hurricane shelling of “democratic Georgia” of sleeping Tskhinval from multiple rocket launchers stayed in the past and the conflict is settled. And if Georgia as “settlement” understands proliferation of its jurisdiction over the territories of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, this is not a settlement but a pursuit to annexation of foreign territory. As soon as Georgia is really wants to become a “supplier of security” it should refuse from claims for the territory of the Republic of South Ossetia, establish with it diplomatic relations, refuse from aggressive rhetoric and compensate the damage caused to the Republic of South Ossetia. Only these steps may become a real prove of Georgia’s intention to make contribution in the strengthening of peace and security in the Caucasian region.

As for the problem of refugees so the “support” (less than one third of member states) of annually put by Georgia to the vote in General Assembly on refugees and IDPs is provided by blocking by Georgia of possibilities to fair investigation of this question in the premises of UN. Adoption of mentioned resolutions always happened without taking into account the position of South Ossetia, which is refused in possibility to submit to General Assembly the real picture of refugee’s problem. Politicized approach of Georgia have nothing common with real care of refugees undermining efforts of searching for solutions and is pursuing only one goal – again and again denote their claims to the lands of others.
