On 11 October in Geneva, the United Nations Human Rights Council, with the support of the delegations of the European Union, Bulgaria, Japan, Luxembourg and Finland, adopted another resolution entitled “Cooperation with Georgia”, which contains biased statements that do not reflect reality about the so-called occupation of Georgian territories and “human rights violations… in Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions of Georgia’.
We are compelled to remind the participants of the discussion of the provisions of the United Nations Charter defining, in particular, the rights of peoples to decide their own fate. The peoples of South Ossetia and Abkhazia have made that choice. The Republic of South Ossetia and the Republic of Abkhazia are States recognized by United Nations Member States, first and foremost the Russian Federation, which is also a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. In this regard, any talk of “occupation of Georgian territories” is absolutely untenable.
Regarding the expressed “concern over human rights violations”, it should be noted that international organizations dealing with this issue have unfortunately become highly politicized. This has, naturally, seriously undermined the credit to these institutions.
