Statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia

МИД Южной Осетии

Due to the sharp escalation of the military and political situation in the Middle East caused by US and Israeli air strikes against Iran, amid diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis that took place the day before, the situation in the region is characterised as extremely unstable.

The attacks have resulted in numerous casualties among the civilian population of Iran, including senior political and military leaders. The death of its supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, has been confirmed.

In response to the aggressive actions, Iran has announced attacks on a number of US military bases and defence and intelligence infrastructure located in Kuwait, northern Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE and Israel.

Further escalation of the situation could also lead to a humanitarian and economic calamity in the region, where nuclear power facilities are located.

We are convinced of the need to comply with international law in order to quickly ease tensions surrounding the Islamic Republic of Iran and return the situation to the negotiating table.

The current state of emergency will inevitably affect foreign citizens who are in the Middle East on private business or tourist trips.

For the information of citizens of South Ossetia and Russia who may be or currently are in countries in the region and are experiencing difficulties with transit or departure, please contact your airline as a matter of priority to clarify the status of your flight and possible alternative routes.
