Comment of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia is showing its concern over M. Saakashvily` s statement which he made on January 25th of this year on live broadcasting channel PIK (First Informational Caucasian).

Only not long ago while making a speech in European Parliament M. Saakashvily was announcing his peaceful intensions and renunciation of resort to military force against South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Now he says that “the war is not over”. Recent meeting of M. Saakashvily with American senators within the framework of his visit to Washington where they promised him “to provide Georgia with the defence armament so that it could defend itself from Russian occupiers” does not tie up with his declaration that Georgia will not use a force alternative of conflict resolution, all the more so Saakashvily had made the same statement, word for word, several hours before Georgia began war aggression in August 2008.

Leaving abusing tone and attacks upon Russia on the conscience of Georgian leader one has again to pay attention to the absolutely groundless usage of the expression “Georgian territories occupied by Russia”. Republic of South Ossetia is the recognized country, and its territory should not in the least be considered as «occupied Georgian territory”. Russian military contingent implements its mission on the territory of South Ossetia in terms of corresponding bilateral agreements and is a guarantee of nonrenewal of hostilities from the side of Georgia.

Mikhail Saakashvily in no way can calm down, though one thing is certain – all his convulsive actions directed at search of the new irritants are not equitable to the interests of Georgian people and can only bring to extra problems.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia considers that the leaders of Georgia should not look for an “external enemy” but they should concentrate their efforts on solving socio-economic problems within the country. Mikhail Saakashvily`s words that the war is not over demonstrate total lack of sense of limits verging on irresponsibility.

Any “grand promises” of Georgian governing body can be taken seriously only after they acquire validity. It is high time to switch from the declarations of such intentions over to signing legally bound agreement on non-use of force by Georgia. However, persistent repetition of the thesis about “occupied territories” by the President of Georgia, his threats and abusing tone exclude the possibility of renewal of the political dialogue with him.
