August 8, 2012 a round table "Iron Nykhas" with the participation of the representatives of the Ossetian diaspora and foreign countries took place in Tskhinval. It was organized on the initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia in the frames of the commemorative events devoted to the fourth anniversary of the August 2008 armed aggression of Georgia against South Ossetia, in which hundreds of people, including Russian peacekeepers stationed in South Ossetia under an international mandate were killed.

On October 9, 2012 Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia D.G. Sanakoyev had a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov as a part of his first official visit to the Russian Federation.

In connection with an armed provocation of Georgia in the territory South Ossetia

On September 29, 2012, at 3:40 am, South Ossetia border post in the village of Karzman, Java region, was gunned with automatic firearms and grenade launchers. In a statement issued after the NATO Summit in Chicago on May 21, 2012, the member states of NATO, supporting Georgia's aspirations to join NATO called on Russia "to deny its recognition of the Georgian regions South Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent states and to reduce the Russian military presence in these regions."
