Comment by the Representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia on the address by Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze of Georgia at the United Nations General Assembly session

МИД Южной Осетии

We have taken note of yet another address by Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze from the rostrum of the United Nations General Assembly. Regrettably, the Georgian leadership continues to pursue its previous course with regard to South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

Tbilisi’s actions continue to display a clear discrepancy between its declarations and its practical steps, which remain detached from actual geopolitical realities. This is borne out by the unceasing steps taken by official Tbilisi against South Ossetia. In particular, at the Discussions on Security in Transcaucasia, Georgian representatives continue categorically to refuse to conclude a legally binding agreement on the non-use of force.

Assertions about a “centuries-old common fatherland” run entirely counter to historical realities, while the persistent theses about “occupation” are devoid of legal and political grounds. The people of South Ossetia, who have endured severe trials, today clearly distinguish between the destructive steps of their neighbours and genuine partnership that guarantees the security of the region.

The Georgian leadership must accept the existing status quo and recognise that Russia’s decision of 26 August 2008 to recognise the sovereignty of South Ossetia and Abkhazia is a definitive political and legal fact.
