Comment by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia in connection with the multinational military trainings Agile Spirit – 2025 held in Georgia

From July 25 to August 6, NATO Agile Spirit 2025 exercises will be held in Georgia with the participation of Western Command of the Georgian Defence Forces and the U.S. National Guard. As noted, the goal is to build military capacityand to foster interoperability between the 13 participating states.

The drills, which will be held for the twelfth time, involve armored vehicles and aircraft from NATO countries, including the United States. According to the plan, the exercises will beconducted with live firing. Contrary to the traditional statementsabout their “peaceful” nature, the regular military activity of theAlliance in a region with a high level of conflict cannot butcause concern in South Ossetia.

It is obvious that the use of the territory and military infrastructure of Georgia, as well as the participation of units of the Georgian armed forces, have very specific political and strategic goals, and pose a direct threat to the security of the Republic of South Ossetia and the entire Transcaucasian region.

Against the background of the official Tbilisi’s blocking of the agreement on Georgia’s non-use of force against South Ossetia and Abkhazia in the framework of the international discussions on security in Transcaucasia, similar military exercises with participation of NATO states alongside with public demonstration of force are fraught with an increase of military and political tensions in Transcaucasia.
