On May 29, 1992, the Supreme Council of the Republic adopted the Act of Declaration of Independence of the Republic of South Ossetia
This historic decision, based on the people's right to self-determination, was made at the height of the Georgian military aggression against South Ossetia. The decision, impeccable from the point of view of international law, confirmed the will of the people, expressed in the 1992 referendum. It was dictated by the need to form a state of its own, as the only means of protection and guarantee of the observance of the rights and freedoms of the people of South Ossetia.
