Press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia on the Day of Memory and Sorrow

May 20 in South Ossetia is the Day of Memory and Mourning. On this day in 1992, at the height of the Georgian military aggression against South Ossetia, on the bypass road through the village of Zar, a column of refugees from South Ossetia was shot by Georgian extremists. As a result of this barbaric action, 33 people died - mostly children, women, the elderly, about 20 people were seriously injured.

According to tradition, at the place of the tragedy in the village of Zar, near the memorial “Mourning mother”, a mourning event was held, in which the leadership of the Republic of South Ossetia, headed by President Anatolii Bibilov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia to South Ossetia Marat Kulakhmetov, and members of the public took part.

The participants laid wreaths and flowers at the monument to the victims of the Zar tragedy and honored the victims with a minute of silence.
