Press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia

Upon an invitation from Stato Veneto Political Movement the South Ossetian Foreign Minister Dmitrii Medoev made a report at the International Days of Self-determined Nations (Giornate Internazionali dell’Autodeterminzione dei Popoli) held in Verona on October 26.

Important aspects of the South Ossetian nation building process, political and legal grounds for the independence of the Republic, which from the point of view of international legislation are based on unfailing steps, were mentioned in the report of the Minister.

The Minister took a brief journey into the history of the struggle of the South Ossetian people for independence and told about the events of August 2008 – the most difficult period in contemporary history of Ossetia, which came to the end on August 26, 2008 – the day of recognition of the Republic of South Ossetia by Russia, the recognition, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year.

As noted the Minister, the Russian Federation is the main and major partner and ally of South Ossetia. And it was Russia who came to rescue South Ossetia at the moment of danger and existential threat, when the matter of life and death of the Ossetian people was being resolved. It was also stated that huge work on establishment of full-fledged interstate relations has been done and a solid contractual base, numbering more than 100 agreements of various levels covering all fields of interaction, has been developed over the last 10 years.

Dmitrii Medoev emphasized the important role of the Russian Federation in maintaining security of South Ossetia, the necessity of further work in framework of the Geneva International Discussions on Security and Stability in Transcaucasia, which are conducted in accordance with Medvedev-Sarkozy's agreements reached after the military aggression of Georgia against South Ossetia in August 2008, and reiterated the South Ossetia readiness (shown throughout these 10 years) to full-scale work on maintaining security in the region – the main objective of the Discussions. It’s known, however, that the Georgian side has still been blocking signing of the legally binding agreement between Georgia and South Ossetia on non-use of force.

The speech of the Minister was listened with great attention. Afterwards Dmitrii Medoev answered numerous questions from attendees.
