Press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia

On May 16 in framework of the working visit to Abkhazia Dmitrii Medoev, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia, participated in a scientific conference entitled “The Republic of Abkhazia: struggle for the independence, present-day realities and perspectives”, dedicated to the 25th Anniversary of the Independence and the Victory in the Abkhazian Patriotic War of 1992-1993 and the 10th Anniversary of its Recognition by the Russian Federation.

Raul Khadzhimba, the President of the Republic of Abkhazia, Daur Kove, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Abkhazia, as well as figures of science and culture, participated in the conference, organized in the Sukhum Museum of Military Glory named after Vladislav Ardzinba.

In his speech the Abkhazian President noted that the dramatic events, which the Abkhaz nation had experienced, confirm its readiness to further struggle and untiring activity for the sake of preserving and building independence and freedom and strengthening the national sovereignty of the Republic of Abkhazia.

The South Ossetian Foreign Minister Dmitrii Medoev made a report entitled “Russia-South Ossetia: two states, one nation”, where he touched upon the history of the Ossetian-Russian relations, the 10th anniversary of the recognition of the independence of the Republic of South Ossetia by the Russian Federation and the perspectives of the bilateral relations.

In particular the Minister noted:

“Every year we commemorate the tragic date of August 8 – the anniversary of the treacherous attack of the Saakashvili’s regime on South Ossetia. There is no doubt that that event will remain in memory of our people as the darkest and the most tragic period in our history. It was the year of the greatest losses.

Alongside with this we consider the year 2008 as the year of the greatest achievement – reestablishment of the Ossetian citizenship. That’s why the August 26 is rightfully considered a national holiday – the Victory Day.
I would like to stress that in South Ossetia we’ll always appreciate the assertiveness of Russain authorities, demonstrated in taking decisions, which were of vital importance for us. I would like to quote President Putin: “the decisions taken by the Russian Federation in August 2008 were not easy, but the only possible ones”. Russia has made its choice, and this choice is final, irreversible and irrevocable”.

Following the conference an appeal was made regarding further international recognition of the independence of Abkhazia.
