Press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia

“The Agreement on the frontier between the Republic of South Ossetia and the Russian Federation” has been signed on February 18, 2015 in Moscow. The ceremony took place within the official visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia D. G. Sanakoev to the capital of the Russian Federation. The agreement was signed by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs - D. G. Sanakoev on South Ossetian side and S. V. Lavrov on Russian side.

The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs A.K. Kochiev, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of RSO in the Russian Federation D. N. Medoev, the Plenipotentiary of the President of RSO on post-conflict settlement M. K. Dzhioev also participated in the ceremony on the Ossetian side.

Signing the agreement between South Ossetia and Russia is an outstanding achievement in developing cooperation in political sphere and generating legal base for interstate relations. Agreements on frontiers are necessary within interstate relations of any adjacent countries. This document gives an international legal status to the South Ossetia-Russian border and creates conditions for establishing good-neighbourhood between the two states.

Earlier the heads of South Ossetian and Russian foreign affairs departments have exchanged opinions on current international problems, terms of interaction within the Geneva discussions on the stability and safety in Transcaucasia. Further cooperation between the countries - enhancing the full-scale interstate collaboration, strengthening foreign policy interaction, has also been negotiated.
