On 2 August, commemorative events were held in Bologna on the occasion of the 46th anniversary of the terrorist attack at the railway station. In 1980, the explosion at the station claimed the lives of 85 people and injured more than 200; it is the largest terrorist attack in the modern history of Italy. In memory of those killed in the attack of 2 August 1980, Italy has declared 2 August a Day of Remembrance for the victims of all mass murders.
As in previous years, the mourning ceremony was attended by the Representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Ossetia in Italy, Mauro Murgia, and other representatives of Ossetia. The International Peace Prize "Beslan — City of Peace" was also awarded for the first time. Its first laureate was the Association of Relatives of the Victims of the Terrorist Attack of 2 August 1980.
Beslan and Bologna are bound by many years of relations: after the terrorist attack at Beslan School No. 1 in September 2004, Italian specialists and families were among the first to come to the aid of the families of the victims and those injured at the hands of terrorists, and joint participation in commemorative events has become a tradition.
The International Peace Prize "Beslan — City of Peace" was established in 2026 at the initiative of the Representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia in Italy, Mauro Murgia. The prize is awarded for a special contribution to the preservation of peace and to assistance to children and those in need.
