Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia on the decision of the Republic of Naoero to terminate diplomatic relations with the Republic of South Ossetia

МИД Южной Осетии

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia has taken note of the decision of the authorities of the Republic of Naoero to terminate diplomatic relations with the Republic of South Ossetia, behind which external pressure is clearly discernible.

This step is not a consequence of the bilateral agenda. According to available information, the government of Naoero has for a long time been subjected to serious influence, often accompanied by threats. It is obvious that Georgia, with the support of Western structures, continues to use every lever — from political blackmail to economic incentives — in order to persist in its attempts to isolate South Ossetia on the international stage. Such actions merely confirm the difficult conditions in which small island States have to work.

We respect the sovereign right of any State to determine independently the priorities of its foreign policy and to take decisions proceeding from its own national interests. However, it is regrettable that the sovereign decision taken by Naoero in 2009 was revised not because of a change of position on the substance of the matter, but at the dictation of others.

Diplomatic relations are not merely a formality — they are an indicator of the political maturity and independence of a State. South Ossetia has always valued the support of Naoero, which was among the first, after August 2008, to recognise the Republic during a difficult historical period.

Notwithstanding all the circumstances, the Republic of South Ossetia will continue its course towards strengthening its international recognition and expanding ties with States that share the principles of justice and respect for the will of peoples. The Republic of South Ossetia does not build its foreign policy on dependence on the opportunistic decisions of individual countries. Our main ally is the Russian Federation, and our right to sovereignty is confirmed by the will of the people, which cannot be revoked by any diplomatic notes written under pressure from the "collective West" and the actions of Tbilisi's emissaries.

Georgia's attempts to "clear" the diplomatic field around South Ossetia are a futile struggle against a reality that took shape long ago and have no effect on the real status of South Ossetia.
