We have taken note of the recent statement made on behalf of the European Union regarding Brussels' intention to "work" with the People's Assembly of Syria in order to review Damascus' sovereign decisions. This concerns attempts to pressure the Syrian leadership into revoking its recognition of the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
We regard such rhetoric on the part of the EU as gross interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign state. The European Union, which declares its commitment to the principles of international law and respect for state sovereignty in words, is in practice attempting to dictate to an independent Syria which foreign policy decisions it should take and which it should annul.
We would like to remind European officials that the recognition of the Republic of South Ossetia by the Syrian Arab Republic in 2018 was an act of free will on the part of a sovereign state, based on objective historical reality and the right of peoples to self-determination. This decision was taken in strict accordance with the norms of international law and is not subject to revision under pressure from external forces.
Brussels' attempts to use levers of economic or political influence to revise the established geopolitical realities in Transcaucasia appear not only futile but also counterproductive. Instead of imposing its will on other countries, the European Union would do well to pay attention to the real reasons that led to the recognition of South Ossetia's independence — namely, the aggressive policy of Tbilisi, which in 2008 brought the people of the Republic to the brink of physical annihilation.
