Comment by the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia on the statement by N. Samkharadze, Chairman of the Committee on International Relations of the Parliament of Georgia, at the 33rd Annual Session of the OSCE

Nikoloz Samkharadze, Chairman of the Committee on International Relations of the Parliament of Georgia, addressed the 33rd Annual Session of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly's General Committee on Political Affairs and Security. His remarks concerned the Treaty on Deepening Allied Relations between the Republic of South Ossetia and the Russian Federation, signed on 9 May. He called it "a desperate attempt by Moscow to entrench the occupation and facilitate the de facto annexation of territories internationally recognised as an integral part of Georgia."

This statement once again demonstrates Georgia's complete rejection of international legal realities. South Ossetia has every right to conclude international treaties that serve its national interests. Accusations of "annexation" can only be regarded as an attempt by official Tbilisi to distort reality and to shift responsibility for its own aggressive actions and historical mistakes.

It is high time to recognise that no statements by Georgian politicians can change the status of the Republic of South Ossetia.
