The so-called European Court of Human Rights — or, more accurately, the European judicial tribunal — has once again confirmed its political myopia and absolute partiality, accusing Russia, in accordance with the prepared script and the approved scenario, of allegedly violating the rights of "eight Georgian prisoners of war during the 2008 armed conflict."
The "pious and God-fearing judges" have entirely disregarded the findings of the European Union commission headed by the Swiss diplomat Heidi Tagliavini, which recognised Georgia as the aggressor for its attack on South Ossetia in 2008, as well as the thousands of victims and tens of thousands of those who suffered at the hands of Georgian nationalists. Nor did they deign, even for the sake of propriety, to peruse the materials of the investigation conducted by the Georgian parliamentary commission, which condemned a number of former figures of the Saakashvili regime. It should be noted, however, that they were tried not for the "crusade" against South Ossetia as such, but for having failed to bring their bloody design up to the planned targets of the document entitled "Clear Field."
Their Lordships in robes likewise did not pause to consider what, in fact, those eight servicemen and thousands of Georgian soldiers with tanks were doing in a peaceful city and villages of the Republic of South Ossetia. Nor why Georgian artillery was razing and reducing to ashes peaceful neighbourhoods and a hospital in Tskhinval, as well as the positions of the Russian and Ossetian peacekeeping forces stationed in South Ossetia under an international mandate. Nor are these "judges" concerned by the fate of the hundreds of innocently killed and missing Ossetians in Georgia, information about whom continues to be suppressed by the official Tbilisi. That, of course, is a different matter.
Regrettably, little remains of what was once an enlightened Europe. It has become a conduit of double standards and of biased policies, including in the service of Georgian interests. History has taught South Ossetia much; the South Ossetian people have become more discerning in their choice of friends and in the vector of their development, which is directed towards building and strengthening relations with friendly countries and peoples, above all with Russia.
