Comment by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Ossetia on the Resolution Initiated by Georgia on Refugees and Displaced Persons from South Ossetia and Abkhazia, Adopted by the United Nations General Assembly

МИД Южной Осетии

On 4 June, within the framework of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, a resolution initiated by Georgia on refugees and displaced persons from South Ossetia and Abkhazia was once again adopted, which yet again demonstrates a flagrant disregard for realities and the imposition of a one-sided position that fails to take into account the true causes and consequences of the events that occurred.

Regrettably, a once respected international platform has in recent years become a conduit for Georgia's destructive policy towards the Ossetian and Abkhaz peoples. The deliberate suppression of the tens of thousands of victims and the hundreds of thousands of expelled civilians of Ossetian and Abkhaz nationality in the course of ethnic cleansing is nothing other than an attempt to justify the criminal policy of Georgian nationalism.

We are compelled to state that Georgia, politicising the refugee issue in the absence of the South Ossetian and Abkhaz sides, continues to use the UN platform to advance its own political interests, manipulating historical facts and seeking to present itself as an innocent victim.

Such actions on the part of the Georgian regime, held captive by its "phantom pains" following the operation to enforce peace in August 2008 and endeavouring to ignore objective reality, increasingly convince us of the correctness and immutability of the historical choice of the Republic of South Ossetia in favour of the comprehensive strengthening of allied relations with the Russian Federation.

The adoption of documents divorced from reality does not contribute to the settlement of existing problems, but merely creates new obstacles on the path towards sustainable peace and security in the region.

We express the hope that the international community, in the person of the United Nations, will ultimately be able to look upon the situation objectively and renounce politicised approaches that merely aggravate existing problems.
