The Foreign Minister of Syria A. Al-Shibani Sends Message to South Ossetian Foreign Minister A. Dzhioev in Reply to the Independence Day Congratulations

Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Syrian Arab Republic Asaad Hassan Al-Shibani, in his message, expressed gratitude to Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia Akhsar Dzhioev in acknowledgement of the congratulations extended on the occasion of the Independence Day of the Syrian Arab Republic.

The letter, in particular, reads:

"It was with great warmth that I received Your kind congratulations on the occasion of Independence Day (Evacuation Day). Availing myself of this opportunity, I wish to convey to Your Excellency my most sincere wishes for robust health and well-being, and to Your people – for further prosperity and progress."

Syria's Independence Day is observed annually on 17 April – the day in 1946 when the last foreign soldier withdrew from Syrian territory and the country attained independence. This day is also referred to as Evacuation Day.

In the congratulatory letter from Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia Akhsar Dzhioev, previously addressed to Minister of Foreign Affairs of Syria Asaad Hassan Al-Shibani, it was stated:

"The historic date of 17 April 1946 marks the great feat of the Syrian people, who, at the cost of immense exertions, affirmed their right to independence, peace and tranquillity, and their right to determine their own destiny.

Today, notwithstanding the difficulties of a global character affecting every aspect of contemporary international relations, Syria is confidently advancing along the path of development, creation and the strengthening of its international standing and state institutions. It is my sincere hope that the traditionally warm and friendly relations between our countries and peoples will continue to serve the common goals of preserving peace, stability and security."
