Comment by a representative of the South Ossetian Foreign Ministry in connection with the statement of a representative of Georgian Foreign Ministry

МИД Южной Осетии

The statement of the Georgian Foreign Ministry on the situation in Venezuela, which, in particular, expresses the hope that the events would lead to the cancellation by Caracas of the “illegal decision” on recognizing the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, wasn’t left without attention.

The issue of recognition or non-recognition is the sovereign right of each of the parties. The decision of the Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, which responded to the appeals from the Governments of South Ossetia and Abkhazia for the recognition and, following the Russian Federation and the Republic of Nicaragua confirmed the international legal personality of the Republic of South Ossetia, is beyond doubt.

It should also be emphasized that the legality of the decision of the Venezuelan leadership cannot be subject of discussion and, moreover, does not need to be assessed by a third party, which by the results of the investigation conducted by the international commission, has been recognized as the aggressor against South Ossetia during the events of August 2008. Our relations with the Latin American country are based on the norms of international law and are enshrined by bilateral treaties.

South Ossetia stays in contact with Venezuelan colleagues and expresses hope for the speediest stabilization of the situation. We call on Tbilisi instead of reading the tea leaves, to be constructive and recognize the existing political realities in the region, which would contribute to strengthening peace and security.
