26 August marks the seventeenth anniversary of the recognition of the state independence of the Republic of South Ossetia by the Russian Federation.
This momentous date was preceded by many years of struggle by the South Ossetian people for their independence, culminating in Georgia's military aggression against South Ossetia in August 2008, carried out with the full support of Western countries. These events led to the creation of new geopolitical realities in the region.
By recognising South Ossetia's independence, Russia acted as a guarantor of its existence as an independent state and of a peaceful future for the South Ossetian people. The decision of the Russian leadership not only confirmed the right of the South Ossetian people to live freely but also ensured their reliable protection and support in the current complex and tense political situation.
Today, South Ossetia and Russia continue to cooperate comprehensively on issues of defence and security, economic and social development of the Republic within the framework of bilateral agreements.
The friendship between the two countries and peoples has been tested by time. South Ossetia values the level of political dialogue with the Russian Federation and proceeds from the need to further deepen allied relations and strategic partnership.
Happy holiday!
