The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia extended a note with words of sympathy and support to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic in connection with the 33rd anniversary of the Bendery tragedy.
The note, in particular, reads:
“The Bendery tragedy is the example of the catastrophic consequences that nationalist extremism can lead to. 33 years ago, as a result of the treacherous invasion of the Moldovan armed forces to a peaceful city, hundreds of civilians were killed, thousands were forced to leave their homes, and entire neighborhoods of the historic city were destroyed.
The Bendery tragedy became a severe ordeal that tempered the spirit of the Pridnestrovian people, uniting them in a common desire to protect their land, culture and the right to self-determination. Today, the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic demonstrates sustainable development, strengthens its sovereignty and continues to build a just society based on the principles of interethnic harmony.
On this tragic day the people of South Ossetia bow heads in memory of the victims of the Bendery tragedy. The sacred memory of the defenders of Bendery will forever remain a moral guideline for current and future generations.”
