On 29 May the Republic of South Ossetia celebrates the 33rd anniversary of the adoption of the Act of Proclamation of Independence of the Republic of South Ossetia.
The adoption of this important political document was dictated by the political and military situation that emerged in the early 90s. In difficult conditions of political uncertainty, large-scale aggression and terror on the part of Georgia, the people of South Ossetia declared their inalienable right to establish their independent state.
The Act of Independence, based on the results of the referendum of 19 January1992, being impeccable in terms of international law, became a symbol of victory and national unity of the South Ossetian people in their struggle for self-determination and for the right to control their own destiny.
Over the past 33 years, South Ossetia has passed a difficult path, facing enormous difficulties and challenges. However, state sovereignty and independence have opened up truly unprecedented opportunities for our country and people. State symbols, property rights and natural resources were defined, and the South Ossetian people were given the opportunity to decide independently on issues of cultural, educational and spiritual development, new state institutions were established and armed forces were formed.
The aspiration and historical right of the South Ossetian people to build a sovereign state has been officially recognized internationally by the Russian Federation and a number of other countries.
Everyone who stood at the origins of our Republic and defended it deserves the deepest gratitude and respect of all future generations. We will never forget the cost of our freedom and independence.
Today South Ossetia stands on the threshold of new challenges. Amid the rapid transformation of the world order with extraordinary changes, it is important that our state continues to develop, preserving its identity and relying on the principles of independence and self-determination.
