32 years separate us from that fateful May Day, when the Supreme Council of the Republic of South Ossetia adopted the historic document – the Act of Declaration of Independence of the Republic of South Ossetia.
The adoption of the Act was dictated by the necessity to formour own state as the only means for defending and guarantyingexecution of the rights and freedoms of the people of South Ossetia. The adoption of the Act was aimed at saving the Ossetian population from the complete genocide by Georgia and gave start to the complex and multifaceted process of creation and development of the Republic of South Ossetia.
The Act of Declaration of Independence, dated May 29, 1992 remains impeccable in terms of international legislation. While taking the decision, members of the Supreme Council were guided by the historical facts, which had served as legal basis for formation of statehoods.
The many years-lasting struggle of the Ossetian people for freedom and independence culminated on August 26, 2008, when the Russian Federation recognized the independence of the Republic of South Ossetia.
