Press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia

Upon an invitation from Baron Waqa, the President of the Republic of Nauru, Dmitrii Medoev, the South Ossetian Foreign Minister, will visit the Republic of Nauru since January 25 till February 4, 2018.

On January 31, 2018 the Minister will participate in the festivities, dedicated to the 50th Independence Day of the Republic of Nauru.

In framework of the visit a meeting of Dmitrii Medoev with Baron Waqa, the President of Nauru, is planned. The parties are expected to exchange opinions on the conditions and perspectives of development of the South Ossetian-Nauruan relations and cooperation of the two states at the intentional arena.

The Republic of Nauru is state, located at the Nauru Island, laying in south-west part of the Pacific Ocean.
January 31 is a national holiday of the state – the Independence Day of the Republic of Nauru (1968).

On December 16, 2009 the Republic of Nauru recognized the independence of the Republic of South Ossetia, and the documents on establishment of diplomatic relations between the two states were signed.

The Agreement on establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of South Ossetia and the Republic of Nauru was signed by Dmitrii Medoev, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of South Ossetia in the Russian Federation, and Kieren Keke, the Minister for Finance and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Republic of Nauru.

Comments given in the Republic of South Ossetia on this Agreement state that the Governments of the two states were guided by “the desire to promote mutual understanding and strengthen friendly ties and cooperation between the two nations”. Thus, the Republic of Nauru became the 4th state which after Russia, Nicaragua and Venezuela recognized the independence of South Ossetia.

Under the agreements reached by the President of the Republic of South Ossetia Anatolii Bibilov and the President of the Republic of Nauru Baron Waqa in Moscow, Taimuraz Bitiev, a citizen of South Ossetia and New Zealand, was appointed as the Representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nauru on November 13, 2017.
