Pertaining to the 25th Anniversary of the Act of Declaration of Independence of the Republic of South Ossetia
Against the background of escalation of the armed aggression of Georgia against the people of South Ossetia and bloody fighting, a session of the Supreme Soviet of the Republic of South Ossetia took place in Tskhinval on May 28-29, 1992 where the Act of Declaration of Independence of South Ossetia was adopted.
From the perspective of international legislation, it was a perfect historic step, based on the results of the Referendum, conducted in 1992, and driven by the need to build our own nation, as it was the only security measure and guarantee of respect for the rights and freedoms of the people of South Ossetia.
It is noted in the document that it has been accepted “keeping in mind the existential danger hanging over the Republic of South Ossetia as a result of the crimes which have brought the people and the culture to the brink of extinction, because of the perfidious genocide of the Ossetians, organized by the Republic of Georgia in 1989-1992 in the course of the USSR’s dissolution”.
The first Council of Ministers of the Republic and the most important institution of the independent South Ossetia - the Ministry of External Relations of the Republic of South Ossetia (which in 2002 was transformed into the Ministry of Foreign Affairs) were formed at the same historical session. Since 2011 this significant date has been celebrated as the Diplomat’s Day.
Established 25 years ago, the diplomatic service of the Republic from its first days of working in hard conditions actively got to work on defending the sovereign interests of the state, recognition by the international community the right of the people of South Ossetia for freedom and independence, strengthening foreign policy positions of the young Republic and distribution of information about the real state of affairs in South Ossetia.
Making use of the quarter century experience, drawing on the fact of recognition of the sovereignty and independence of the Republic of South Ossetia, firstly, by the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has successfully been pursuing the foreign policy course of the State, protecting and promoting its national interests at the international stage, upholding its sovereignty and rights of its citizens living abroad, creating favorable external conditions for social and economic development of the country.
