The Statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia on detention in Georgia of Tamaz Goloev, a resident of the Leninogor District of the Republic of South Ossetia

As it has become known, on April 24, the Tbilisi City Court, in a closed session, imposed a preventive measure in the form of detention on Tamaz Goloev, a resident of the Leninogor District of the Republic of South Ossetia, who had been illegally detained earlier by the Georgian State Security Service and accused of espionage under a far‑fetched pretext.

On April 21, a citizen of South Ossetia and a student at the South Ossetian State University named after A.A. Tibilov, T. Goloev, entered the territory of a neighboring state on personal business via the “Razdakhæn” checkpoint, located in the Leningor District of South Ossetia on the border with Georgia. On April 22, Goloev was captured in Tbilisi as a result of a provocation by Georgian security services and placed under arrest.

Upon receiving reliable information regarding this incident, the South Ossetian side used all available means to ascertain the fate of T. Goloev, including through the hotline of the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism (IPRM).

During ongoing consultations within the framework of the IPRM hotline, on the evening of April 24, the South Ossetian side was informed that Tamaz Goloev, a resident of the Leninogor district of South Ossetia, had been granted a preventive measure in the form of a two‑month pre‑trial detention by court order. The next court session will be held in June this year.

We regard such unjustified actions by the Georgian repressive apparatus, which are openly political in nature, as a gross violation of T. Goloev's rights and a continuation of the terror policy of the Z. Gamsakhurdia and Mikhail Saakashvili, and we call for his immediate release.

What happened to T. Goloyev is clear evidence that the territory of Georgia, despite the occasional “peace‑loving” statements made by representatives of official Tbilisi, has been and remains dangerous and hostile to South Ossetia and its residents.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia strongly recommends that residents of South Ossetia refrain from traveling to Georgia for safety reasons.
